Why Unsubscribes Are Actually Good for Your Business

Scared of unsubscribes? Don’t be, here's why

Hey there 👋

It’s Philip, from Inbox Insider.

Let’s talk about something that makes a lot of ecom brands panic: unsubscribes.

Here’s the thing…unsubscribes are 100% natural for EVERY e-commerce brand.

In fact, they’re a good thing.

This goes against everything you know or have been taught about email marketing in the past, so i’m sure you’re thinking I’ve officially went insane.

Let me explain.

I’ve heard more times than I can count from e-com brand owners that they only send 1 campaign per week because “when we send more emails, our unsubscribes go up.”

Here’s the thing…If someone unsubscribes from your email list, chances are they were never going to buy from you in the first place. And if they weren’t going to buy, what’s the point of keeping them on your list?

Keeping people who couldn’t care less about your brand on your email list hurts more than it helps.

It drags down your open rates.

It tanks your engagement metrics.

It messes with your deliverability.

Basically, unsubscribes are your list’s way of naturally filtering out people who don’t align with your brand and offer.

It’s important to understand that a healthy email list isn’t about size, it’s about engagement.

Would you rather have 10,000 subscribers who open every single email and buy from you regularly, or 50,000 subscribers who barely engage?

The reality is, unsubscribes are a natural part of having an email list. It’s irrational to think that EVERYONE who has ever given you their email will want to remain on your list forever.

Someone might have subscribed when they were in the market for what you offer, but now their priorities have shifted, or their problem has been solved.

Maybe they signed up out of curiosity and realized your product isn’t for them. That’s okay, it’s better to let them go than to try to hold onto people who no longer see value in your content.

When you avoid sending emails because you’re afraid of unsubscribes, you’re holding yourself back from engaging the audience that does care, and you’re holding yourself back from making more revenue from your email list.

You’re essentially standing in your own way.

The One Caveat to This

Unsubscribes aren’t scary if your list is growing at the rate it should be.

For example: One of my clients doing over $400k/mo in revenue consistently loses about 700 subscribers every week. Like clockwork.

But our sign-up forms bring in over 1200+ new subscribers per week.

Which means they’re actually GAINING 500 new subscribers every single week, despite having 700 people unsubscribe.

Unsubscribes are nothing to worry about if you’re on top of your list growth.

Now…If you’re struggling with list growth, then you probably SHOULD worry about unsubscribes.

And If you’re one of those people, here’s a 41 page step-by-step guide on how to increase sign-up form submission rate and grow your list faster: https://gamma.app/docs/My-41-Page-Pop-Up-Form-Blueprint-0l7ooouhhvwlhin

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Is your pop-up form optimized for conversions?

  • Are you testing new offers and lead magnets?

  • Are you A/B testing copy on your forms?

  • Are you A/B testing creatives on your forms?

Moral of my rant: Don’t be afraid of sending more emails due to unsubscribes, AS LONG as you have solid list growth methods.

Unsubscribes are a natural part of running an active email list.
